With Attitudes Changing, It’s Time to Change Your Generator Hire

Date: 28/02/25

The start of 2025 has brought a raft of bad news for the environment and the fight against climate change. It seems that every day there are new headlines about a company or a government scaling back their sustainability targets. Which means it’s never been more important for us all to do whatever we can to play our part in protecting the planet by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and finding more sustainable solutions – such as solar powered generator hire from Think Hire.

Companies scaling back

Two of the world’s biggest energy companies have taken significant steps backwards since the start of 2025. First, Norwegian energy company Equinor announced that they were going to halve their investment in renewable energy and drop a promise to spend half of their fixed assets budget on low carbon energy by 2030. The reason they gave was chilling: "We are scaling down our investments in renewables and low carbon solutions because we don't see the necessary profitability in the future," said Chief Executive Anders Opedal.

BP quickly followed suit, freezing new wind projects, cutting its $10bn investment in renewables in half, and abandoning a target of 50GW of renewable generation by 2030. Echoing Mr Opedal, a former head of strategy at BP said that energy companies would only invest in renewable energy when they can see ‘clear profit’.

Banking giant HSBC have also announced this week that it will no longer strive to achieve zero emissions across its operations, blaming slow progress on decarbonisation across its supply chain.

Governments getting cold feet on global warming

There have also been some serious setbacks on a national level, and not just in the US, where Donald Trump has been ripping up the playbook on climate change. Trump has forged ahead with his ‘drill, baby, drill’ strategy, going further than anyone expected. In his first month as president, Trump has:

  • Withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement (joining Iran, Yemen and Libya as the only other countries not part of the crucial deal)

  • Removed references to climate change on government websites for transport, defence, state and agriculture

  • Ended the leasing of federal land to windfarms

  • Announced the end of the New Green Deal which channelled billions of dollars into clean energy

Things have got off to a rocky start here in the UK too, with the announcement of a new third runway at Heathrow and the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport to add to the pollution. The Government also managed to block a new climate bill that would’ve set legally binding targets on climate change and the protection of nature.

Protect the environment and your bottom line

Finance is the driving force behind many of these policies, with Trump claiming to make America a rich nation again through oil and gas, and the oil giants claiming green initiatives are unprofitable. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
