With a Solar Powered Generator, Net Zero is Not Impossible.

There was considerable media attention recently when Kemi Badenoch declared that Net Zero was impossible for the UK. The Conservative leader claimed that there was no way that Britain could reach Net Zero by 2050 without a serious drop in living standards, or without the idea bankrupting the country altogether.

Naturally, her comments brought widespread condemnation, especially from environmentalists, but is she actually right? Is the world really on target to meet the goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement, or is the fight against global warming just a bunch of hot air? United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, says that “Government or private sector commitments to Net Zero cannot be a mere public relations exercise”, but are they anything more than that?

Far from the target

When asked ‘are we on track to reach Net Zero by 2050, the United Nations website bluntly says ‘NO’. ‘Commitments made by governments to date fall far short of what is required’ to reach Net Zero by 2050 it states frankly, and the figures chillingly bear this out.

The current legislation on climate change agreed by the signatories of the Paris Agreement would result in a 2.6% drop in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To reach Net Zero this needs to be more. A lot more. In fact, greenhouse gas emissions need to be reduced by 43% to keep us on target.

No wonder many leading figures, such as Badenoch, think the Net Zero target is impossible. Analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit shows that as few as 47 of the 195 countries who signed the Paris agreement have enshrined Net Zero in law, with more than 50 merely listing it in a policy document and a further 50 still in discussions or making declarations.
