Powering Up Britain
Date: 05/04/23
Last week, the UK Government released its latest plans for meeting the tough ‘net zero’ targets agreed at the 2015 Paris Climate Summit. But why was a new strategy needed, what was the reaction from academics and campaigners, and how can your business play its part in the climate challenge?
What was announced?
The new strategy, called ‘Powering Up Britain’ ran to over 1000 pages and covered all levels of energy use, from small homes to huge businesses. It included measures to increase carbon capture, build more nuclear power stations, promote wind and solar power and a great deal more. However, it lacked detailed plans to help with insulating homes, one of the key calls from climate protestors.
Why was a new strategy needed?
You’d think that after signing a legally binding climate agreement in 2015, the Government would already have such policies in place. However, they were forced to review and refocus their strategy after a group, including Friends of the Earth, took them to the High Court last summer. The action group claimed that the existing policies were simply not enough to meet the legally binding net zero target. The court agreed and gave the Government until the end of March to provide more detail.
How was the new strategy received?
The new strategy has come under fire from all sides since it was released. The Green Party’s Caroline Lucas quipped that “the greenest thing about (the strategy) is the recycling of already announced ideas”. University of Manchester climate change expert, Dr Chris Jones, described it as “a weak response to the UK’s zero carbon energy needs”, while Friends of the Earth said that the policies were ‘dangerously lacklustre’ and that they were ‘poised to act if ministers have fallen short again’.

Appoint Think Hire as your renewable energy partner and we not only guarantee to help you to cut emissions from your site, such as CO2, but we’ll also guarantee to cut your operating costs too.
You don’t have to wade through a 1000page document, and you don’t have to get involved in the political fight. You can simply make your construction site greener and more sustainable today, to make a positive contribution to the climate of tomorrow.
Work towards net zero today
With solar power generators from Think Hire, you can achieve net zero far sooner than 2050. Solar power generators can power everything from site lighting to electric vehicle and plant chargers. They can also power staff welfare units and site offices, using clean, free power from the sun. Many of our solar power generators also come with a diesel back-up, giving you complete confidence in your continuing supply, while still significantly reducing your carbon emissions.
Don’t miss out
Powering Up Britain may have been a ‘missed opportunity’, but that doesn’t mean your site has to miss out on the benefits of solar power generators. So why wait for the Government to lead the way, when Think Hire have already helped hundreds of businesses, just like yours, to cut their emissions AND cut their costs, with solar power generators?
Don’t make this a missed opportunity for your construction site. Contact the team at Think Hire today to see how solar power generators can help you on the path to net zero and cut the estimated 12% of emissions that come from manufacturing and construction in the UK.
