Powering Electric Vehicles With Renewable Energy Sources

Date: 12/02/24

The transition to electric vehicles may be essential in the fight against climate change, but it has certainly not been a smooth one. Late last year, the Government announced that the ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles was to be moved back from 2030 to 2035. What’s more, the media is full of stories about how charging facilities across the UK are failing to keep pace with rising demand.

In fact, there has been so much negative press about electric vehicles, that the House of Lords has had to step in. This week, the Lords Climate Change Committee called on the Government to do more to challenge the disinformation, myths and mistruths about electric vehicles which are constantly appearing in the media.

A ‘concerted campaign of misinformation’

The committee report pointed to what it described as a ‘concerted effort to scare people’ when it comes to moving over to electric vehicles. This includes stories about electric cars catching fire, drivers being stranded by electric vehicles with limited range, and exaggerations about the purchase and running costs of electric cars.

The committee says that the Government needs to do more to build consumer confidence. The committee chair, Baroness Parminter, said that it was vital that the Government provides reliable, accurate information to the public, in order to counter the falsehoods that people are constantly being fed.

Although the UK passed the milestone of 1 million electric car sales in January, sales are slowing down. The committee feels that the misinformation being circulated is at least partly to blame for this. Electric car sales fell from an average 16.5% of all sales in 2023, to just 14.7% in the first month of 2024.

Positive news about electric vehicles

Here at Think Hire, we’re more than happy to help the government to dispel the myths that are holding back the transition to electric vehicles. We not only strongly believe in electric vehicles, we provide practical support to help you run your electric fleet, including simple ways to run your vehicles using a renewable energy source.

Think Hire electric vehicle and plant charging points are a flexible way to connect a renewable energy source, such as a portable solar power station, to on-site plant and equipment, as well as inter-site vehicles, such as company cars. This delivers a double benefit to the environment, not only cutting the use of fossil fuels in the engine itself, but also using a renewable energy source to generate the electricity.
