As we start a New Year, we’d like to offer our very best wishes from everyone here at Think Hire. Whatever you’ve got planned for 2023, we’ve got the environmentally friendly plant and equipment you need, including portable solar generators and solar battery generators.
For 2023, this blog will be changing a little. We’ll be focussing on the latest news in the construction industry, across building projects, road and rail works. We’ll also be keeping you right up to date with all the news from the energy industry, including the growth of renewables, the latest climate and energy legislation and the global climate picture. So if you want to stay informed about all aspects of construction and energy, check back here regularly for our latest blog.
As we started 2023, there were two major stories, one bringing bad news on climate change, while the other offered real hope for the future.
Climate change is clear
The bad news was that there were clear signs of climate change affecting the UK. Annual figures released by the Met Office confirmed that last year was the warmest on record in the UK. The striking headline was that the country averaged over 10°C for the first time since comparable records began in 1884. What’s more, all four of the home nations set a national record for average temperatures, ranging from 10.94°C England at to 8.50°C in Scotland.
The UK also broke the record for the highest ever recorded temperature, with 40.3°C recorded in July at Coningsby in Lincolnshire. Scotland and Wales also broke their national records. Overall, three quarters of the hottest days ever recorded in the UK have occurred this century, making the impact of climate change undeniable.
Elsewhere in the world, that impact is even greater, with catastrophic floods in Pakistan and North Western Australia and droughts in the US and Africa. Globally, there have been many more storms and significant weather events than usual and eight countries across Europe recorded record January temperatures on New Year’s Day. The need for change in the ways we generate power has never been clearer or more urgent.
The solutions are here
The good news is that this is slowly starting to happen, especially here in the UK. According to BBC News, the UK produced more energy from renewables and nuclear power than from greenhouse gas-producing fossil fuels in 2022. Wind energy produced more than a quarter of the UK’s electricity last year, with the growing solar power sector adding a further 4.4% - almost three times as much as coal.
In total, 48.5% of our electricity was produced using renewable energy and nuclear power across the year, while coal and gas produced just 40%. Better still, during February, May and in October to December, zero-carbon sources produced more than half of the UK’s electricity.
