Is Your Site Generator Hire Generating CO2?

Date: 30/01/25

Figures released recently show that the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are at their highest since records began. 2024 saw the highest annual increase in CO2 ever recorded at the Mauna Loa research station in Hawaii, where work began in 1958, while ice core and marine sediment samples suggest that CO2 levels have not been this high for over two million years.

This increase means global CO2 is now 51% higher than it was in pre-industrial times, at 424.61 parts per million (ppm). What’s more, the 3.58ppm/year increase is twice the maximum 1.8ppm/year limit which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says is needed to avoid a climate catastrophe.

Unfortunately, CO2 is not the only problem. Intense greenhouse gas methane, which is around 30 times more potent at causing global warming, is also up by 165%, while nitrous oxide levels are 25% higher.

A record-breaking year

To underline the climate crisis, CO2 levels were not the only records set in 2024. Last year was also the warmest on record for both air and sea surface temperatures, making the last ten years the hottest decade on record. The world also saw severe heatwaves and droughts, storms and flooding, which simply could not have happened as intensely without the input of man-made climate change.

Significantly, 2024 was also the first year to surpass the Paris Accord level of 1.5°C, although the formal agreement level is averaged over decades. According to Earth.org, World Meteorological Organization experts predict that it is ‘more likely than not’ that we will pass the crucial threshold by 2027, with the UN predicting a rise of 2.6°C to 3.1°C by the end of the decade if things don’t change.

Is it too late to make a difference?

Amongst all of this sobering news, the good news is that it is not too late. You can still make a difference to climate change with everything you do, from the cars you drive to your choice of site generator hire.

"Even if 1.5 degrees is out the window, we still can probably limit warming to 1.6C, 1.7C or 1.8C this century," says Dr Hausfather, a climate scientist at the Berkeley Earth research group. "That's going to be far, far better than if we keep burning (fossil fuels like diesel) unabated and end up at 3C or 4C - it still really matters.

"It's not like 1.49°C is fine, and 1.51°C is the apocalypse,” he explains. “Every tenth of a degree matters.” That’s why everybody, and every business, needs to take action today, and here at Think Hire we’re ready to help with an unrivalled range of eco-friendly products and services.
