Green Generator Hire is More Important Than Ever as Climate Change Starts to ‘bite’
Date: 27/05/24
All too often, phrases like global warming and climate change seem too big and too all-encompassing for us to get the sense that they are affecting our daily lives. The climate emergency may fill up the headlines and take the blame for everything from mild winters to cold wet summers, but sometimes it can be hard to feel the real, personal impact of these changes.
However, that could soon change for people in the UK, as climate change starts to bite – quite literally – with the arrival of new species of mosquitoes across the country.
Mosquitoes have arrived
New research shows that hitherto unseen species of mosquito have been found in the UK as far north as Scotland. While these may not currently be the kind of species that carry disease, some scientists think that it’s only a matter of time before they are joined by their more deadly cousins.
Globally, malaria from mosquitoes affects 219 million people and causes 400,000 deaths every year. Mosquitoes also carry diseases such as dengue fever and Zika, as well as West Nile virus, which has been spreading across Europe and has already reached France.
While we may not be in any immediate danger from these flying pests, scientists say it’s only a matter of time. Professor Ferguson, who led the research in Scotland, says “with warming temperatures we’re going to see larger numbers of mosquitoes, potentially different species, including some that might be migrating from other areas where they can transmit diseases.”
The environment is on the rocks
Further dramatic evidence of global warming also made the news this week, with scientists confirming that Venezuela has lost the last of its glaciers. The Humboldt glacier has reduced in size so much that it has now been reclassified as an icefield.
This might not feel that important to us here in the UK, but for the people of Venezuela, glaciers are vital for fresh water, energy and irrigation for food security. Once they’re gone, they’re unlikely to return as the ground becomes too warm for ice to freeze to replace the glacial deposits.
According to glaciologist Dr James Kirkham, “the latest projections show that between 20% and 80% of glaciers globally will be lost by 2100 depending on the emissions pathway we follow. However, rapidly lowering CO2 emissions could still save some of these glaciers."
It’s not too late
From mosquitoes to mountain glaciers, from extreme weather to floods and wildfires, global warming is having a tangible and devastating effect all around the world. But it’s not too late for you to make a difference.
Think Hire are dedicated to making green, low carbon energy affordable and accessible to sites right across the UK through solar generator hire.
By choosing the right generator hire, you can significantly cut your CO2 emissions and reduce your use of fossil fuels. What’s more, Think Hire’s state of the art energy monitoring means that this environmentally friendly generator hire could cost less to run than the carbon-heavy, polluting alternative.
It’s not too late, but there is also no time to lose in changing the way we operate, from generator hire to energy management. Today, the mosquitoes in Britain are just annoying and irritating, but if we don’t control our CO2 emissions and slow climate change, they could soon become a deadly threat.
Global warming might seem too big a problem to solve, but every little helps. To find out more about how your site can play its part in the fight against climate change by changing its generator hire, get in touch with Think Hire today.
Unlike the new species of mosquito invading the UK, we promise we won’t bite!
