In a breakthrough announcement this week, the US and China reaffirmed their commitment to triple renewable energy by 2030 as part of the fight against climate change. US – China talks make progress
The joint statement was welcomed by climate bodies around the world, as it marked positive progress between the two superpowers on perhaps the most important issue facing the world today.
The agreement, which was reached between by John Kerry and his Chinese climate counterpart, Xie Zhennhau, will give a fresh impetus to the COP28 climate summit, which is due to take place in Dubai at the end of November.
The Sunnylands Statement
In a joint statement, entitled the Sunnylands Statement on Enhancing Cooperation to Address the Climate Crisis, the US and China agreed to ‘restart the US-China Energy Efficiency Forum to deepen policy exchanges on energy-saving and carbon-reducing solutions in key areas including industry, buildings, transportation, and equipment’.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, Article 2 of which aims to ‘hold the global average temperature increase to well below 2°C and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C’.
There was, however, no mention of plans to end the use of fossil fuels, which will be a major focus of the COP28 talks.
